Wisdom Teeth Removal Frisco, TX

The professionally trained team at Root Periodontal and Implant Center at 6340 Preston Rd. in Frisco, Texas specialize in comprehending the dynamics of wisdom teeth. If you have any questions concerning whether wisdom teeth removal frisco tx is best for you, contact us today at 469-489-7668.  It’s possible it may not be necessary to have your wisdom teeth removed. Some people do simply fine. The Frisco team will do a full evaluation of your mouth prior to any decisions moving forward. The procedure to remove the wisdom teeth is often suggested because by leaving them it can result in various oral health issues, such as infections, the misalignment of your teeth, nerve and jaw damage, pain, and tooth decay.

Wisdom teeth are an incredibly unique, third set of molars that are the last teeth to erupt, most often between the ages of 18 and mid-twenties. Wisdom teeth are the perfect example of our evolution. As our lifestyles and diets have changed over many centuries so have our teeth. Studies have found around 35% of the human population born without wisdom teeth, while another 20-25% are born with only one to three wisdom teeth.

We enjoy and are committed to ensuring that you maintain a healthy smile. We are also always excited to provide you with the newest dental technology to make sure all periodontal procedures are in your best interests. We have other services available that can also maintain the health of your smile.

Several Factors in determining whether you should have your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

There are some problems that can occur by not having the wisdom teeth extracted. A few prevalent issues are:

  • Damage to Adjacent Teeth: When you cannot thoroughly clean the wisdom teeth, the surrounding teeth can become negatively affected which will cause gum disease, decay, or bone loss.
  • Crowding: One of the most common causes of crowding is impacted wisdom teeth. This is when the tooth does break the surface, because there just isn’t room for the tooth in the arch.
  • Infection: When there is not enough room for total eruption, the gums around the wisdom teeth can become painful, infected, or irritated, which will cause issues such as swelling, and difficulty with chewing, eating, or swallowing.
  • Cyst Formation: When teeth do not erupt and stay impacted, cysts can develop and begin to destroy the jawbone and any surrounding teeth.

Frisco Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

If it is to be determined that wisdom teeth removal is indeed in your best interests, you will want to schedule an evaluation. During this initial consultation we will examine the overall health of your teeth and gums, review your oral medical history, and determine what treatment options will be best suited to your specific needs. We are all different. Many people do not realize our teeth and gums are as unique to us as our fingerprints.

If it has been determined that you are a good candidate to have your wisdom teeth removed, your procedure will typically begin with the administration of some level of anesthesia. The type of anesthesia that is used may vary, depending upon the severity of your situation as well as your overall pain sensitivity. If you need a heavier sedation you will have to have someone drive you home after your procedure. Once you have either local anesthesia or are properly sedated, your periodontist will start to cut away the bone tissue and gum that covers the impacted tooth. Then the tooth will be divided into sections and removed with forceps. Once, the tooth has been removed, the site will be cleaned, and then if necessary, sutures will be used to facilitate the healing process. If you do require stitches, they will dissolve 3-5 days after your procedure. If the wisdom tooth is erupted through the tissue, we will extract the tooth just like any other tooth.

Aftercare for Wisdom Teeth Removal in Frisco, TX

Following your wisdom tooth procedure, you will experience some mild to moderate pain, as well as some minor bleeding. Swelling is also common for two days. To help reduce the swelling, use an ice pack for twenty-minute intervals. During your recovery period it is also an exceptionally good idea to limit any physical activity until after full recovery. This typically takes three to five days. We will also strongly recommend following a clear liquid diet after the procedure, and then slowly reintroducing harder foods as you heal.

As with other medical procedure there is always the possibility of some complications occurring. Rare but possible complications after a wisdom tooth extraction might include dry sockets, infections, delayed healing, or tingling or numbness in your lips tongue, or chin. By following the aftercare instructions, you will reduce any likelihood of these complications occurring.

Once you have healed there will be no additional instructions. It is particularly important to continue to always practice good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth twice a day and also flossing at least once daily. It is also incredibly wise to schedule regular checkups with your periodontist at least every six months. By maintaining this consistent, preventative oral health care routine, you will significantly reduce your risk of dealing with any additional periodontal issues.

The Cost of having Wisdom Teeth Removed

There are a number of factors that can impact the final cost of having a wisdom tooth or teeth removed. We will start with the severity of your case, the difficulty or complexity involved in the removal, what type of anesthesia is administered, and any other associated procedures that might need to be performed prior to or along with treatment. Your insurance plan coverage will factor in as well.

PERIODONTAL SERVICES

To determine if you have gum disease, your periodontist will measure the space between your teeth and gums. Patients who have pockets that are deeper than the average depth of three millimeters or less will be considered candidates for treating gum disease. Depending upon how severe your case is, your periodontist will suggest a follow up appointment, during which several different treatment options may be recommended.
