Why Dental Implants

Patients who are missing a tooth or multiple teeth may greatly benefit from having dental implants placed. Your smile is a very undervalued asset. It is the foundation for your personality. A healthy smile impacts your self-confidence and self-esteem. Beyond the perception of your smile missing teeth can also cause a range of health issues if left untreated, including the following:

  • Jawbone loss: A missing tooth or teeth left untreated for too long is the leading cause of jawbone loss. Teeth play a unique role in supporting and stimulating the jawbone. If the jawbone does not receive this support and stimulation for too long, it will begin to atrophy.
  • Shifting: When one or more teeth are missing, shifting can be significantly accelerated and create a domino effect that impacts the entire bite.
  • Malocclusion: When a patient’s bite has become compromised due to shifting, a range of issues related to this malocclusion can develop, such as TMJD, loss of additional teeth, tooth sensitivity, muscle pain, headaches, and more.
  • Difficulty eating: Depending upon where your missing tooth/teeth are located, you may find it difficult or be unable to enjoy certain foods as your ability to chew properly may be diminished. This in turn can result in digestion issues, such as acid reflux.
  • Aged appearance: As the jawbone begins to atrophy, your face can begin to sink and sag, making you appear older than you are.
  • Speech difficulties: Patients who have a missing tooth or teeth often find they develop difficulty pronouncing certain words, and may also experience involuntary spitting, whistling, or slurring when speaking.

CONTACT ROOT™

Scheduling regular visits to maintain your teeth and gums will actively improve your overall health, and maintaining a bright and strong healthy smile will do wonders for your self-confidence.

The Dental Implant Process

To determine if dental implants are right for you, you will need to schedule an initial consultation. We will examine the overall health of your teeth and gums, review your medical history, and decide what treatment options are best for your unique needs.

If dental implants will be suitable for your situation the first step is to confirm the decision by taking x-rays to assess the density of the jawbone. Then the procedure begins with the numbing of the gums with a local anesthesia. Once properly numbed, your periodontist will make a small incision in your gum to gain access to the jawbone. Next, a small hole is drilled in the bone into which the titanium post will be placed. Next a temporary restoration will be placed, which is to be worn until the jawbone has sufficient time to grow around the implant, which can take several months. This process (osseointegration), the fusing of the post to the jawbone, determines the strength and durability of the dental implant and it is important. Once complete, the abutment or extension is added, and the permanent artificial crown is adhered to the extension. Just like that you have a healthy smile again.

Two exceptions to this simple procedure is if you need a tooth extracted prior to starting or if the x-ray shows that some bone grafting needs to be done to improve the density of the jawbone.

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are a surgical component(s) that connect a dental prosthesis, a ceramic or porcelain artificial crown, to the jawbone. Dental implants have become the new gold standard in the health industry for patients who are missing teeth and would prefer something more permanent than dentures.

Implants are composed of the following three parts:

  • Base: Screw post made of titanium, which is unique in its ability to fuse with bone. Provides a stable base for the implants
  • Abutment (connector): Joins the prosthesis, or crown, to the implant, or post
  • Crown: The artificial tooth part of the implant, typically made of porcelain or other ceramic material to mimic the natural look of your surrounding teeth

Costs Associated with Dental Implants

There are a range of factors that can impact the final cost of having a dental implant or implants, such as the severity of your case, any associated procedures that will need to be performed prior to or along with treatment, as well as your insurance plan.

Our team is committed to helping you complete necessary paperwork, schedule appointments, and answer any questions you have concerning billing. For patients who have insurance plans, we do request you submit medical/dental insurance information with your New Patient Paperwork to expedite this process.

Please note: to reduce costs to our patients while still ensuring that we can provide the highest level of care, we have the following financial polices:

  • Full payment is due after services rendered
  • Payment plan options are available via www.CareCredit.com

The Aftercare for Dental Implants

Following your dental implant procedure, stick to a soft food diet for the first two weeks, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing process progresses. There are no additional aftercare instructions you will need to follow beyond this temporary modification of your diet, although it is important to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once daily, and ideally every time you brush your teeth. It is also important to practice proper brushing and flossing techniques and continue scheduling regular checkups with your periodontist every six months. By maintaining a consistent, preventative oral health care routine, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing additional periodontal issues, your dental implants will not need to be replaced, and you can continue enjoying healthy smile for years to come.
