Several Factors in determining whether you should have your Wisdom Teeth Removed?
There are several issue or problems that can develop by not having the wisdom teeth extracted. A few prevalent examples are:
- Crowding: One of the most common causes of crowding is that of impacted wisdom teeth. This is when the tooth does not erupt, or break the surface, because there just is not room for the wisdom tooth in the arch.
- Infection: When there is not adequate room for total eruption, the gums around the wisdom teeth can become infected, which will cause issues such as swelling, pain, and difficulty with biting, chewing, eating and or swallowing.
- Damage to The Adjacent Teeth: When you cannot thoroughly clean the wisdom teeth, the neighboring teeth can become negatively affected which will cause decay, bone loss or gum disease.
- Cyst Formation: When teeth become impacted, cysts may develop and begin to destroy the jawbone and the surrounding teeth.
Wisdom Teeth Removal Ft. Worth Procedure
To see if wisdom teeth removal is indeed in your best interests, you will want to schedule an evaluation. During this initial consultation we will examine the overall health of your teeth, review your medical history, and determine what treatment options might be best suited to your specific needs. Our teeth and gums are as unique to us as our fingerprints; we are all different.
If we together determine that you are a good candidate to have your wisdom teeth removed, your procedure will typically begin with the administration of anesthesia. The type and amount of anesthesia that is used may vary, depending upon the severity of your case as well as your overall sensitivity. If you need heavy sedation you must have someone drive you home following your procedure. Once you have either local anesthesia or are properly sedated, we will cut away the bone tissue and gum that covers the impacted tooth. Then the tooth will be divided into sections and removed using forceps. Once, the tooth or teeth have been removed, the site will be cleaned, and then if necessary, stitches will be used to facilitate the healing process. If you do require stitches, they will typically dissolve 3-5 days after your procedure. If the wisdom tooth is erupted and visible, we will simply extract the tooth as with any other tooth.
Aftercare for Wisdom Teeth Removal
Following your wisdom tooth procedure, it is normal to experience mild to moderate discomfort, as well as minor bleeding. Swelling is also common for two days. To help reduce the swelling, use an ice pack for twenty-minute intervals. During your recovery period it is also a good idea to limit any serious physical activity until you have recovered. This typically takes three to five days. We will also recommend following a clear liquid diet after the procedure, and then slowly reintroducing harder foods as you heal.
As with any medical procedure there can be the possibility of complications occurring. Rare but possible complications associated with wisdom teeth extraction might include infections, dry sockets, delayed healing, or tingling or numbness in your lips, tongue, or chin. By following the aftercare instructions properly, you can reduce any likelihood of these complications occurring.
Once you have healed there will be no additional instructions. It is quite important to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth twice and flossing at least once daily. It is also smart to schedule regular checkups with your periodontist every six months. By maintaining a consistent, preventative oral health care routine, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing additional periodontal issues.
The Cost of having Wisdom Teeth Removed
There are several factors that can affect the final cost of having a wisdom tooth or teeth removed. It starts with the severity of your case, the difficulty involved in the removal, what type and how much anesthesia is administered, and any associated procedures that might need to be performed prior to or along with the treatment, as well as your insurance plan coverage.
