Why Consider Dental Implants

Patients who are missing either one tooth or multiple teeth may greatly benefit from receiving dental implants. Your smile is a terrifically undervalued asset. It is literally the foundation for your personality. A healthy smile impacts both your self-confidence and your self-esteem. This is across your personal encounters, your social circles, and your professional experiences. In addition to the perception of your smile missing teeth it can also cause a range of health issues if left untreated, such as the following:

  • Speech difficulties: Patients who have a missing tooth or teeth often find they develop difficulty pronouncing certain words, and may also experience involuntary spitting, whistling, or slurring when speaking.
  • Shifting: When one or more teeth are missing, shifting can be significantly accelerated and create a domino effect that impacts the entire bite.
  • Jawbone loss: A missing tooth or teeth left untreated for too long is the leading cause of jawbone loss. Teeth play a unique role in supporting and stimulating the jawbone. If the jawbone does not receive this support and stimulation for too long, it will begin to atrophy.
  • Malocclusion: When a patient’s bite has become compromised due to shifting, a range of issues related to this malocclusion can develop, such as TMJD, loss of additional teeth, tooth sensitivity, muscle pain, headaches, and more.
  • Difficulty eating: Depending upon where your missing tooth/teeth are located, you may find it difficult or be unable to enjoy certain foods as your ability to chew properly may be diminished. This in turn can result in digestion issues, such as acid reflux.
  • Aged appearance: As the jawbone begins to atrophy, your face can begin to sink and sag, making you appear older than you are.

Scheduling regular visits to maintain your teeth and gums will actively improve your overall health, and maintaining a bright and strong healthy smile will do wonders for your self-confidence.

The Dental Implant Process

An initial consultation will need to be schedule to determine if dental implants are right for you. Our team will examine the overall health of your teeth and gums, then review your medical history, and then decide what treatment options will work best for your individual needs.

If dental implants are the answer to your situation the first step is to confirm that decision by taking x-rays to analyze the density of the jawbone. Then the implant procedure begins with the numbing of the gums with a local anesthesia. Once sufficiently numbed, the periodontist will make a small incision in your gum to gain access to the jawbone. Next, a small hole will be drilled in the jawbone into which the titanium post will be implanted. Then a temporary restoration will be placed, which needs to be worn until the jawbone has adequate time to grow around the implant, which can take up to several months. This process (osseointegration), the fusing of the post to the jawbone, determines both the strength and the durability of the dental implant and it is an important step. Once fused, the abutment or extension is then added, and the permanent artificial crown is adhered to the extension. Just like that you have a healthy smile again. A smile that you are confident in.

Two exceptions to this simple procedure is if you need a tooth extracted prior to starting or if the x-ray shows that some bone grafting needs to be done to improve the density of the jawbone.

What exactly is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are a small surgical component(s) that connect a dental prosthesis, a ceramic or porcelain artificial crown, to your jawbone. Dental implants have recently become the new gold standard in the health industry for patients who would prefer something more permanent than dentures when seeking teeth replacement

Implants are composed of three parts:

  • Base: A screw post made of titanium, which is quite unique in its ability to fuse with bone. This titanium post provides a stable base for the implants
  • Abutment (connector): An extension that joins the prosthesis, or crown, to the implant, or post
  • Crown: Typically made of porcelain or other ceramic material, the crown is the artificial tooth part of the implant, that mimics the natural look of your surrounding teeth

Costs Associated with Dental Implants

There are a variety of different factors that can impact the final cost of having a dental implant or implants. Starting with the severity of your case, jawbone health, sedation, and any associated procedures that will need to be performed prior to or along with treatment, number of appointments necessary, as well as your insurance plan.

The ROOT team in Flower Mound is committed to helping you complete necessary paperwork, schedule appointments, and answer any questions you might have concerning billing. For those patients who have insurance plans, we do request you submit medical/dental insurance information with your New Patient Paperwork to expedite this process.

The Aftercare for Dental Implants

Upon the completion of your dental implant procedure, it is best to stick to a soft food diet for the first two weeks, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing process progresses. There are no additional instructions you will need to follow beyond this short term modification of your diet, although it is important to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits. Always brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once daily, and ideally every time you brush your teeth. It is also best to practice proper techniques as you brush and floss and continue scheduling regular checkups with your periodontist every six months. In maintaining a consistent, preventative oral health care routine, you will most notably reduce your risk of developing additional periodontal issues, the life expectancy of your dental implants will be extended, and you can continue enjoying your healthy smile for years to come.
