Why Dental Implants

There are some terrific benefits is you are missing a tooth or teeth and are considering a dental implant. Starting with your smile, it is a very undervalued asset. It is foundational for your personality. A healthy smile has been proven to impact your self-confidence and self-esteem. Even beyond the perception of your smile, missing teeth can also cause a range of health issues if left untreated, such as the following:

  • Shifting: When one or more teeth are missing, shifting can be significantly accelerated and create a domino effect that impacts the entire bite.
  • Speech difficulties: Patients who have a missing tooth or teeth often find they develop difficulty pronouncing certain words, and may also experience involuntary spitting, whistling, or slurring when speaking.
  • Jawbone loss: A missing tooth or teeth left untreated for too long is the leading cause of jawbone loss. Teeth play a unique role in supporting and stimulating the jawbone. If the jawbone does not receive this support and stimulation for too long, it will begin to atrophy.
  • Malocclusion: When a patient’s bite has become compromised due to shifting, a range of issues related to this malocclusion can develop, such as TMJD, loss of additional teeth, tooth sensitivity, muscle pain, headaches, and more.
  • Difficulty eating: Depending upon where your missing tooth/teeth are located, you may find it difficult or be unable to enjoy certain foods as your ability to chew properly may be diminished. This in turn can result in digestion issues, such as acid reflux.
  • Aged appearance: As the jawbone begins to atrophy, your face can begin to sink and sag, making you appear older than you are.

Scheduling regular visits to maintain your teeth and gums will actively improve your overall health, and maintaining a bright and strong healthy smile will do wonders for your self-confidence.

The Dental Implant Process

To see if dental implants are right for you, you will need to schedule an initial consultation. At that time, our team will examine the overall health of your teeth and gums, review your medical history, and then decide and suggest what treatment options are best for your unique needs.

If dental implants are indeed suitable for your situation the first step is to confirm that decision by taking x-rays to assess and analyze the density of the jawbone. Then the procedure begins with the numbing of the gums with a local anesthesia. Once the gums are properly numbed, your periodontist will create a small incision in your gum to gain access to your jawbone. Next, a small hole is drilled into the jawbone into which the titanium post is placed. Then a temporary restoration will be placed. This is to be worn until your jawbone has sufficient time to grow around that titanium implant, which can take several months. The process of fusing the post to the jawbone, (osseointegration), determines the strength and durability of the dental implant and is a crucial step. Once completed, the abutment or extension is then added, and the permanent artificial crown is adhered to the extension. Now you have a healthy smile again.

Two exceptions to this relatively simple procedure is if you need a tooth extracted prior to starting or if those x-rays show that some bone grafting needs to be done to improve the density of the jawbone to accept the post.

What is a Dental Implant?

With the continued introduction of modern technology dental implants have become the new gold standard in the health industry for patients who are missing teeth and would prefer something more permanent than dentures. Dental implants are a surgical component(s) that connect a dental prosthesis, a ceramic or porcelain artificial crown, to the jawbone.

Implants are composed of the following three parts:

  • The Base: Which is a screw post made of titanium, which is unique in its ability to fuse with bone. Provides a stable base for the implants
  • The Abutment (connector): An extension that joins the prosthesis, or crown, to the implant, or post
  • The Crown: The visible, artificial tooth part of the implant, typically made of porcelain or other ceramic material to mimic the natural look of your surrounding teeth

Costs Associated with Dental Implants

There are a range of factors that can impact the final cost of having a dental implant or implants. The severity of your case, placement of the tooth, whether additional sedation is necessary, and any associated procedures that will need to be performed prior to or along with treatment, as well as your insurance plan.

Our experience team is trained to help you complete necessary paperwork, schedule appointments, and answer any questions you have concerning billing. If you have an insurance plan, we do request you submit medical/dental insurance information with your New Patient Paperwork to expedite this process.

Aftercare for Dental Implants

After your dental implant procedure, stick to a soft food diet for the first couple of weeks, then slowly reintroduce harder foods as the healing process progresses. There will be no additional aftercare instructions you will need to follow beyond this temporary change in your diet, although it is important to continue to always practice good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. It is also important to practice proper brushing and flossing techniques and not to get lazy. It is also wise to continue scheduling regular checkups with your periodontist every six months. By sticking with a consistent, preventative oral health care routine, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing any additional periodontal issues. Your new dental implants will enjoy a longer life expectancy and you can continue enjoying healthy smile for years to come.
