Why Consider a Dental Implant?

Patients who are missing a tooth or multiple teeth will benefit from having dental implants placed. Your smile is a terribly undervalued asset. It is the basic foundation for your personality. A healthy smile will impact your self-esteem and your self-confidence. Beyond the visual perception of your smile, missing teeth can also cause other health issues if left untreated, including the following:

  • Aged appearance: As the jawbone begins to atrophy, your face can begin to sink and sag, making you appear older than you are.
  • Difficulty eating: Depending upon where your missing tooth/teeth are located, you may find it difficult or be unable to enjoy certain foods as your ability to chew properly may be diminished. This in turn can result in digestion issues, such as acid reflux.
  • Jawbone loss: A missing tooth or teeth left untreated for too long is the leading cause of jawbone loss. Teeth play a unique role in supporting and stimulating the jawbone. If the jawbone does not receive this support and stimulation for too long, it will begin to atrophy.
  • Shifting: When one or more teeth are missing, shifting can be significantly accelerated and create a domino effect that impacts the entire bite.
  • Malocclusion: When a patient’s bite has become compromised due to shifting, a range of issues related to this malocclusion can develop, such as TMJD, loss of additional teeth, tooth sensitivity, muscle pain, headaches, and more.
  • Speech difficulties: Patients who have a missing tooth or teeth often find they develop difficulty pronouncing certain words, and may also experience involuntary spitting, whistling, or slurring when speaking.

Scheduling regular visits to maintain your teeth and gums will actively improve your overall health, and maintaining a bright and strong healthy smile will do wonders for your self-confidence.

The Dental Implant Process

If dental implants can work for you, it will be necessary to schedule an initial consultation. At that time, we will examine the overall health of your teeth and gums, review your medical history, and then decide what treatment options will be best for your unique needs.

If dental implants will be indeed be suitable for your situation the first step is to confirm the decision by taking x-rays to appraise the density of your jawbone. Then the procedure begins with a local anesthesia numbing your gums. Once properly numbed, your trained periodontist will create a small incision in your gum to allow access to your jawbone. Then the periodontist will drill a small hole in the jawbone into which the titanium post will be placed. At this point a temporary restoration will be placed, which is to be worn until your jawbone has sufficient time to grow around that-implant, which sometimes takes several months. This process (osseointegration), or the fusing of the titanium post to the jawbone, determines the strength and durability of the dental implant and it is particularly important. Once complete, the abutment or extension is then added, and the permanent artificial crown is affixed to the abutment. And just like that you have a healthy smile that brings back your confidence.

Two exceptions to this simple procedure might be if you need to have a tooth extracted prior to starting or if the x-ray shows that some bone grafting to the jawbone is necessary prior to attempting to place the titanium post.

What exactly is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are a single surgical component that connect a dental prosthesis, a ceramic or porcelain artificial crown, to the jawbone. Dental implants have as of late become the new gold standard in the health industry for patients who are missing teeth and would prefer something more permanent than a removable set of artificial teeth.

Dental Implants consist of the following three parts:

  • Base: A Screw post made of titanium, which is unique in its ability to fuse to the bone. This provides a stable base for the implants
  • Abutment (connector): It joins the prosthesis, or crown, to the implant, or post
  • Crown: The visible artificial tooth part of the implant, typically made of porcelain or other ceramic material to match the natural look of your surrounding teeth

Dental Implants and Proper Aftercare

Following your dental implant placement, stick to a soft food diet for two weeks, slowly reintroducing harder foods as the healing progresses. There are no additional aftercare instructions you will need to follow after this temporary modification of your diet, although it is important to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once daily. It is also important, while you are brushing, to practice proper techniques and continue scheduling regular checkups with your periodontist every six months. With the maintaining of a consistent, preventative oral health care routine, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing any additional periodontal issues, your dental implants will not need to be replaced, and you can continue enjoying a healthy smile for an extended period of time.
