Several Factors in determining whether you should have your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

There are a few difficulties that can develop by not having the wisdom teeth extracted. A few prevalent problems are:

  • Crowding: One of the most common origins of crowding is impacted wisdom teeth. This is when the tooth does not break the surface, or erupt, because there just isn’t room for it in the arch.
  • Infection: When there is not adequate room for total eruption, the gums around the wisdom teeth can become irritated and infected, which will cause problems such as swelling, discomfort, and difficulty with eating, chewing, and or swallowing.
  • Damage to Adjacent Teeth: When you cannot completely clean the wisdom teeth, the surrounding teeth can become negatively affected which will cause unwanted decay, bone loss and or gum disease.
  • Cyst Formation: When teeth remain impacted cysts can develop and begin to destroy the jawbone and the surrounding teeth.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Flower Mound Procedure

To determine if the removal of your wisdom teeth is indeed in your best interests, you will want to schedule an initial consultation. During this evaluation we will examine the health of your teeth and gums, review your medical history, and then determine what treatment options are best suited to your personal needs. We are all different. Our teeth and gums are as unique to us as our fingerprints.

If we determine that you are a good candidate to have your wisdom teeth removed, your procedure will most likely begin with the administration of anesthesia. The anesthesia that is used may vary, depending upon the severity of your case as well as your overall sensitivity. If you need a heavier sedation you will need to have someone drive you home following your procedure. Once you have either local anesthesia or are properly sedated, your periodontist will cut away the bone tissue and gum that covers the impacted tooth. Next the impacted tooth will be divided into sections and removed. Once, the tooth has been removed, the site will be cleaned, and if necessary, sutures will be used to facilitate the healing process. If you do need stitches, they will typically dissolve 3-5 days after your procedure. If the wisdom tooth is totally erupted, we will extract the tooth as with any other tooth.

Aftercare for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Following your wisdom tooth extraction, it is common to experience a mild to moderate level of pain, as well as minor bleeding. Swelling is quite common for two days. To help reduce swelling, use an ice pack for twenty-minute intervals. It is also a particularly good idea during your recovery period to limit any physical activity until you have recovered. This typically takes three to five days. We will also recommend a clear liquid diet after the procedure, and slowly reintroducing harder foods as you heal.

As with any medical or surgical procedure there is always the possibility of complications occurring. Unusual but possible complications associated with wisdom teeth extraction might include infections, dry sockets, delayed healing, or tingling or numbness in your lips, tongue, or chin. By following the aftercare instructions properly, you can reduce any likelihood of these complications occurring.

Once you have healed there will be no additional instructions. It is important to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once daily. It is also prudent to schedule regular checkups with your periodontist every six months. By developing a consistent, preventative oral health care routine, you can prevent your risk of developing additional periodontal issues.

The Cost of having Wisdom Teeth Removed

There are several components that can impact the final cost of having a wisdom tooth or teeth removed. We start with the severity of your situation, the difficulty involved in the wisdom teeth removal, what type of anesthesia is used, and any corresponding procedures that need to be performed prior to or along with your treatment, as well as your insurance plan coverage.

PERIODONTAL SERVICES

To determine if you have gum disease, your periodontist will measure the space between your teeth and gums. Patients who have pockets that are deeper than the average depth of three millimeters or less will be considered candidates for treating gum disease. Depending upon how severe your case is, your periodontist will suggest a follow up appointment, during which several different treatment options may be recommended.
