Same Day Dental Implants

Following a tooth extraction, grafting material is sometimes placed in the empty socket to prevent the jawbone from atrophying. In other cases, a dental implant can be placed immediately following the extraction of the tooth. Same day dental implants are a wonderful option for patients who would rather avoid the lengthy process involved in getting traditional dental implants and avoid the uncomfortable experience of having a missing tooth or teeth for an extended period of time. Same Day Dental Implants restore your smile in just one visit. As a result, you can be confident in your smile and enjoy the foods you love.

While you will be able to immediately start enjoying your smile, you will need to return at a later date to replace the temporary crown with your permanent one. Once the permanent crown has been placed, your Same Day Dental Implants process will be complete.

What is Involved in the Procedure?

One important factor that will determine whether Same Day Dental Implants are right for you is the current state of your oral and physical health. Patients who have gum disease or other oral health related issues will need to first address the underlying cause of these issues before Same Day Dental Implants can be placed. Individuals with underlying health issues, such as osteoporosis, diabetes, or Paget’s disease are also not considered good candidates for Same Day Dental Implants, as all of these issues hinder the osseointegration process, which significantly increases the likelihood of implant failure.

The Same Day Dental Implant procedure will begin with a local anesthetic administered, along with dental sedation if preferred or necessary. Next, your periodontist will extract the tooth using an elevator and forceps. If necessary, they may section the tooth to make removal easier. Thanks to the anesthetic and sedation, you will not feel any pain while this is happening, but you will feel some pressure. Once the tooth is removed, the socket is cleaned, and any infected tissue is removed. Next, the dental implant site is prepared, and the implant is placed into your jawbone. Provided the implant is stable, the abutment and temporary crown are then placed. Once the implant has healed fully, you will return in approximately two weeks so your periodontist can evaluate the status of your implant. Once your permanent implant crown has been fabricated, you will return for one last visit where your permanent tooth will be placed.

Are Same Day Dental Implants Safe?

One of the biggest concerns patients have towards Same Day Dental Implants is whether they are safe or not. As is the case with any dental procedure, there are some risks involved in having this procedure performed, but thanks to technological and procedural advancements, and provided you are being treated by an experienced periodontist, your Same Day Dental Implants experience will be completely safe and provide you with immediate results. That being said, to ensure that your Same Day Dental Implant procedure is successful, it is essential that you follow proper aftercare instructions, such as following a modified diet, avoid using your teeth to open packages, and continue to clean and brush your teeth daily. Provided you follow these guidelines, your Same Day Dental Implant procedure will turn out great!
