PerioLase

Periodontal disease is an increasingly common issue, with recent studies indicating that nearly half of all Americans have some form of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease develops when the bones and soft tissue that support your teeth become infected, which typically occurs due to the formation of plaque on the surface of the teeth, which contains bacteria. When the immune system recognizes this bacterium, it tries to eliminate it by releasing substances that cause your gums to become inflamed, which in turns begin to destroy your bone, ligaments, and gums.

Early periodontal disease is characterized by gums that have a pocket depth of four millimeters or more. The greater the depth of these pockets, the more advanced periodontal disease has become. If left untreated, gum disease can cause several oral health issues to develop, such as gum recession, teeth that become loose or fall out, and eventually the deterioration of the patient’s jawbone. In addition to posing a risk to your oral health, recent studies indicate that gum disease may also have a systemic impact, and increase an individual’s risk of other health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and/or stroke.

One of the most effective methods for treating gum disease is with PerioLase, an innovative method for reducing the depth of pockets in your gums with the use of a laser. PerioLase Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is the only FDA-approved laser treatment option for treating periodontal disease, and is one of the safest and most effective method for improving the health of your gums. If you have experienced any common symptoms of periodontal disease, such as gums that bleed easily or have receded, bad breath that does not go away even after brushing, and/or lost or loosened teeth, schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

Why Periodontists and Patients Prefer PerioLase

Treating gum disease with lasers such as PerioLase have become increasingly popular with periodontists and patients. One of the primary benefits enjoyed by patients who receive PerioLase treatment is that treatment and recovery time is significantly reduced. Prior to the development of tools like PerioLase, gum surgery often took several months to complete and involved patients having to schedule multipole appointments which involved having the procedure performed, healing periods, suture removal, then another procedure, followed by healing periods, suture removal, and so on. PerioLase treatment eliminates the need for this extended and invasive process, which means minimal interruption to a patients’ daily activity and faster improvement in overall oral health.

Additional benefits of PerioLase, both for the user and patient, include the following:

  • Field-tested and ergonomically designed to provide periodontists with a balanced and lightweight instrument, which reduces clinician fatigue and allows for improved procedural performance.
  • Allows for correction of periodontal disease that was previously inaccessible, but can be corrected due to the increased reach of PerioLase.
  • PerioLase has a long history of providing effective treatment for patients, as evidenced by having been used and available for over fifteen years, making it the longest-lasting dental laser system.
  • By correcting periodontal disease in an effective and minimally invasive manner, patients will avoid several unfortunate consequences of untreated gum disease, such as tooth loss and/or severe gum recession.
  • Because PerioLase provides clients with a painless and effective solution, patient satisfaction is incredibly high, which means a significant return on investment, not only monetarily, but more importantly in the satisfaction the periodontist and the patient will have with the end results.
  • PerioLase treatment is grounded in evidence-based dentistry and research, which is why it is the only FDA-approved treatment for periodontal disease.
  • PerioLase is constantly adapting to new technologies, such as LCD displays or Android based control systems to improve patient results and increase ease-of-use for periodontists. These improvements in graphics and operating controls means your periodontist is better able to focus more of the clinical procedure.
  • PerioLase is incredibly safe, with zero contraindications

What is Involved in the PerioLase Process?

Unlike traditional methods of treating gum disease, which involve making an incision in your gums to access the roots of your teeth and jawbone, then scraping away the diseased tissue inside of your pockets, PerioLase restores the depth of your pockets by promoting a stable and sterile environment that allows for tissue and bone to regenerate. Prior to beginning the PerioLase process, we will conduct a thorough dental cleaning, and if necessary, administer a local anesthetic. Next, we will target areas that have been affected and use the PerioLase device to kill the bacteria in that location, while still preserving healthy surrounding tissue and cells. Once this is done, ultrasonic scalers remove accumulated tartar at the tooth roots. Once this is complete, we will heat the blood in the pocket with the PerioLase, which will disinfect and create a protective seal, and also stimulate the cells, which facilitates the regeneration of collagen, bone, and connective tissue.

Following this, your PerioLase procedure will be complete!
