Cone Beam CT

When regular facial or dental X-rays do not provide sufficient information required to make a proper diagnosis and treatment plan for periodontal issues, it may be necessary to use dental cone beam computed tomography (CT). Standard dental cone beam CT is generally avoided if possible, due to it having significantly higher radiation exposure, compared to traditional x-rays. Cone Beam CT has become a popular diagnostic tool due to it producing high-quality 3D diagnostic images, using considerably less radiation.

Cone Beam CT involves moving a cone shaped x-ray beam around the patient, which creates a high resolution, clear 3D images of the oral and facial structures, providing periodontists with a view of the patient’s nerves, bone, teeth, soft tissues, airway and nerve pathways in one single scan. The information gathered from these Cone Beam CT images is a critical component in accurately diagnosing and effectively treating a range of oral health issues, and can be applied in several different ways, including mandibular joint appliances, airway appliances, corrective jaw surgery, and/or surgical guides.

Cone Beam CT can also provide a visualization of the nerves to the lip, chin, and tongue, which significantly reduces potential damage that can occur when infected or impacted teeth are removed. For patients scheduled for a bone graft or dental implant procedure, the Cone Beam CT scan provides a clear and undistorted view of your bone, nerves, sinuses, soft tissue, teeth, as well as other structures, allowing your periodontist to accurately determine the proper width, height, and density necessary for a dental implant and/or bone graft.

Cone Beam CT is also a useful tool for diagnosing and treating tumors and cysts, performing bone grafts, removing impacted wisdom teeth, diagnosing TMJ, evaluating the nasal cavity, nerve canals, sinuses, and jaw, reconstructive surgery, and/or identifying the origin of pathology or pain.

Unique Benefits of Cone Beam CT

In addition to these important functions, Cone Beam CT also reduces radiation exposure to the brain, thyroid, eyes and tonsils, as compared to traditional CT scans. Cone Beam CT provides other important benefits, both to the patient and the user, which include the following:

  • High surgical predictability, which results in better surgical outcomes for patients
  • Accurate images of mouth, face, and jaw are provided quickly (20 seconds or less)
  • Can help quickly determine a diagnosis and treatment plan
  • Images soft tissue and bone simultaneously
  • Reduces surgery time
  • Hospital visit not required
  • Can be completed in one visit
  • The intuitive interface and letter landmarks simplifies the examination process
  • Reduced need for retakes due to fast scanning time
  • Designed to ensure patients comfort
  • Fits into tight spaces
  • Can be used for patients in wheelchairs
  • Scans can be shared with and utilized by your physician or other members of your health team
  • Scan is noninvasive and painless
  • No associated immediate side effects

Cone Beam CT also has several distinct advantages with regards to endodontics, implant planning, and oral surgery, which include the following:

  • High resolution panoramic images that can be generated in seconds
  • Cephalometric configuration (optional)
  • Additional procedures can be delivered because of CAD/CAM abilities
  • Produces accurate 3D representations
  • Precision of images due vibration-free motion system and high-frequency generator, result in accurate 3D images that can be viewed at every angle

What is Involved in Cone Beam CT Scan?

Cone Beam CT is safe and designed to create accurate 3D images that can be viewed at multiple angles, while still limiting radiation dosage. The Cone Beam CT machine also has settings that allow for adjustment of the size, resolution, and dose of each exam, along with the ability to target what areas are examined and exposed to radiation.

Having a Cone Beam CT scan does not require any special preparation, although you should plan on wearing comfortable, loose clothing and remove any jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids, hairpins, or anything else that might interfere with the imaging process. Patients who have removable dental appliances may also need to take these out, but this should occur at the office, as it may be necessary for these to be examined as well. It is also important to let your doctor know if you are pregnant before scheduling a Cone Beam CT scan.

Once you are situated (either lying down or in a chair), you will be positioned so the area being examined is centered. Next, the detector and x-ray source will make 360-degree rotations around you for approximately 20-40 seconds to generate an image of the entire mouth and dentals structures, and for approximately 10 seconds if the scan is focused on a specific area of the mandible or maxilla. During this scanning process, it is important that you remain as still as possible. Once the scan is done, your results will be evaluated and a treatment plan will be determined.
