Candidate for Scaling and Root Planing
There are a range of immediate and long-term benefits that you will enjoy following your deep teeth cleaning and deep gum cleaning, including the following:
- Prevents Disease: Periodontal disease that is left unchecked can not only cause oral issues to develop, but can result in other health issues, such as diabetes, heart disease, lung infections, and more. The scaling and root planing procedure is an effective method for quickly improving your oral health and preventing additional issues from spreading.
- Improve Aesthetic Appearance: In addition to the health benefits, scaling and root planing also removes unsightly stains that can develop on the surface of your teeth, resulting in a brighter, whiter smile.
- Protects your Teeth: One of the leading cause of tooth loss is periodontal disease. The scaling and root planing procedure is an effective intervention against pockets that are greater than 3mm, which are where more harmful bacteria can develop, resulting in eventual tooth loss.
- Improves Halitosis: Halitosis (bad breath) is one of the most common signs of periodontal disease. By having a deep tooth cleaning and a deep gum cleaning, the odor caused by bacteria and food debris that are present in the oral cavity will be alleviated.
The Scaling and Root Planing Process
In order to determine if scaling and root planing is right for you, you will need to schedule an initial consultation, during which we will examine the overall health of your teeth, review your medical history, and determine what treatment options are best suited to your unique needs.
If scaling and root planing is determined to be the optimal treatment option for you, your procedure will typically begin with administration of an anesthetic. The type of anesthesia that is used may vary, depending upon the severity of your case as well as your overall sensitivity. Once you are properly numbed, the procedure will go as follows:
- Scaling: Specialized dental instruments will be used to remove the tartar and any build-up of plaque on the surfaces of the crown and root. Certain cases will also use a process that inserts an antimicrobial agent beneath the gums to reduce the oral bacteria.
- Root Planing: Specialized instruments are used to smooth the rough areas of the roots. The smoother your root surfaces are, the less likely tartar, plaque, and/or bacteria are to re-adhere, which gives your gums time to heal.
Following this procedure, you will schedule a follow up appointment, during which your periodontist will examine your pockets to determine if improvements have occurred and help you determine what steps, if any, you will need to take to continue addressing your periodontal issues.
Aftercare for Scaling and Root Planing
Following the procedure, it will be necessary to follow additional aftercare maintenance, however to maximize the benefits and longevity of this procedure, it is critical to practicing good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once daily, and ideally every time you brush your teeth. It is also important to practice proper brushing and flossing techniques and continue scheduling regular checkups with your periodontist every six months, where they can perform deep teeth cleaning and deep gum cleaning. By maintaining a consistent oral health care routine, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing additional periodontal issues, and will continue enjoying a bright and healthy smile for many years to come.
Scaling and Root Planing Cost
There are a range of factors that can impact the final cost of having scaling and root planing performed, such as the severity of your case, any associated procedures that will need to be performed prior to or along with treatment, as well as your insurance plan.

PERIODONTAL SERVICES
To determine if you have gum disease, your periodontist will measure the space between your teeth and gums. Patients who have pockets that are deeper than the average depth of three millimeters or less will be considered candidates for treating gum disease. Depending upon how severe your case is, your periodontist will suggest a follow up appointment, during which several different treatment options may be recommended.
