Procedure
The bone regeneration includes bone grafting. The bone graft will begin with an incision in the gum. This exposes the underlying bone, and the dental professional will remove any infection to ensure the area is clean and healthy. Once the area has been prepared, a graft material is placed. Grafted tissue can be obtained from the patient’s own body or from a tissue bank. Synthetic material can also be used. The dental professional may also place a membrane to protect the grafted area and prevent issues.
In some cases, the periodontist may choose to inject Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) in the grafted area to promote and maximize the bone regeneration. PRGF also helps expedite the healing and recovery. Plasma is obtained from the patient through a blood draw, and a centrifuge separates the growth factors to ensure a high concentration. Plasma is then injected into the graft site.
