How to Get Rid of Swollen Gums?

Causes of pain and swelling in the gums

Several things can cause pain and swollen gums. Gum disease, the lack of certain vitamins (such as vitamins C and E), various infections, cavities, hormonal changes, dental plaque, and the wearing of irritating dentures can all cause your gums to become swollen. Among these causes, we can recognize two main ones: lack of oral hygiene, which leads to the formation of dental plaque, and poorly fitting dentures.

To relieve your pain and help with swelling, you must first identify the type of pain you are feeling:

  • Is it a small ulcer?
  • Did you bite your cheek?
  • Is it a sensitive tooth that creates this painful sensation?
  • Do your dentures move and irritate your gums?

Please note that if you are in a lot of pain or if there is significant bleeding, it is suggested that you speak with or visit a medical or dental professional right away. However, if you just have a bit of swelling, we have compiled a small list of things your can do at home to help alleviate the swelling.

Tip 1

Gently massage your gum tissue with your finger to stimulate blood flow to the painful area. Perform a circular massage for about 1 minute. Be sure to wash your hands well before and after this massage to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Tip 2

Brew a tea bag in hot water to bring out the tannin, then let it cool. Apply the sachet for 5 minutes on the swollen gum. The tannin contained in the sachet will tighten the tissues and reduce the swelling of the gums as well as the sensitivity.

Tip 3

Make a calming paste with 2 tbsp. baking soda, 2 tsp. of peroxide and 1 tsp. of salt. Spread the paste on the painful gum and leave on for a few minutes, rubbing gently. For this trick to be effective, it should be used for at least 3 weeks, for a maximum of 2 months.

Tip 4

Aloe vera is very effective against swollen and bleeding gums. Just rub aloe vera gel on the gums and leave to act. Repeat until the problem goes away.

Tip 5

Use lemon juice. The anti-inflammatory properties contained in lemon juice are very effective in treating gum infections. In addition, lemons contain vitamin C which gives your gums the strength to fight disease. Squeeze the juice of a lemon and add a little salt. Mix until it turns into a paste. Apply this paste on your teeth and leave it on for several minutes. Then gargle with water to rinse off.

Tip 6

Use tea tree essential oil. Tea tree essential oil is an effective and natural antiseptic. Rub some tea tree oil on the gums to stop inflammation of the gums and relieve symptoms. You can also use toothpaste that includes tea tree oil to help fight bacteria when brushing.

Tip 7

Try coconut oil. Coconut oil is a powerful anti-microbial with anti-inflammatory properties. It will naturally soothe your gums in case of gingivitis. Fractionated coconut oil is an effective treatment for the treatment of fragile gums. Put some coconut oil on your clean fingers and rub gently on your gums. Apply this treatment daily.
