How Painful is a Free Gingival Graft Procedure?

The procedure should not be painful whatsoever. Your periodontist might sedate you if necessary. With the sedation used, you may drift off and not remember any details about the procedure. Even if you are not sedated, your dentist will numb the immediate area, so you will still not feel anything throughout the procedure.

Questions regarding pain from gum grafting are most often about pain after the procedure. The pain can vary noticeably depending on the kind of gum grafting procedure. You could experience discomfort from the graft donor site, which is the roof of your mouth, and the graft recipient site, which is the teeth you are correcting.

The Different Gum Grafting Procedures

There are several types of gum grafting procedures. They are:

Free gingival graft – This procedure might be more painful. Many patients rate discomfort higher on a pain scale. The reason for the increased pain is that the donor tissue is harvested from the roof of your mouth. This leaves the underlying gum tissues exposed, resulting in discomfort. Your recipient site will hurt slightly more than the connective tissue grafting or Alloderm procedures. The reason is that the incision design is different for this type of procedure than for the others.
Connective tissue grafting – This procedure is less painful than a free gingival graft. Many patients rate it at a two out of ten on a pain scale. The reason for it not being as painful is that your dentist collects the middle layer from the roof of your mouth and then sutures the surface layer closed, leaving nothing exposed. You could still experience minimal pain at the graft recipient site because of the minimally invasive technique used to avoid an incision at the graft recipient site.
Gum graft donor tissue, gum graft (alloderm), or pinhole procedure – The Alloderm or pinhole procedure is similar in terms of pain. Both procedures still use gum graft donor tissue, but the tissue is not harvested from the roof of your mouth.

Gum grafting pain usually comes from the roof of your mouth. This pain can be avoided by using other gum graft donor tissue. You might also experience some minor pain from the graft recipient site.

Most of your pain or discomfort comes during your recovery. Usually, the free gingival graft is related to the most pain because there are two sites associated with the gum grafting procedure.

The connective tissue graft has little pain from the roof of the mouth and minimal pain from the recipient area being grafted.

Using donor tissue or a pinhole technique allows you to have the least amount of discomfort. Pain during the procedure is minimal if you experience anything at all. IV sedation is advised if you are anxious or nervous because you will not remember anything.

Does Free Gingival Graft Procedure Hurt?

You will be numb throughout your procedure, so you will not feel anything during the procedure. You will feel mild soreness following your procedure, but your periodontal team will provide medications and post-surgical instructions to minimize your discomfort.
