Candidates for Implant Supported Dentures
These implant supported dentures are becoming a popular option for a patient who is missing a tooth or teeth for all the right reasons. Sometimes though, on a rare occasion, a patient may have additional health issues which would mean they are not be a viable candidate for having this solution. Our team will also introduce digital scans. After these scans are taken, some patients may not have the jawbone density to adequately support a dental implant which then dictates a bone graft procedure.
There are some very quantifiable benefits, short-term and long-term, you will enjoy with your implant supported dentures:
- They feel and function like natural teeth
- The titanium posts evenly distribute your bite and chewing forces
- Those titanium posts deliver temperature change sensations
- There is noticeable less discomfort and maintenance then dentures
- Much easier to speak compared to bulky dentures
- They prevent any additional bone loss, which will create an aged appearance
- They maintain the integrity of your bone structure, stymieing atrophy
- They will keep any adjacent teeth healthy
Implant Supported Dentures Process
We must first start with an initial consultation which needs to be scheduled to confirm if implant supported dentures will work for you. At this first exam, we must first understand who you are and your particular situation by scrutinizing the overall health of your teeth and gums. We will also review your full medical history in depth, we will capture a number of x-rays and scans, and only then we will introduce a plan with the treatment options that are best suited to your unique needs. Then our team consults with you to determine how many implants will work best for you. Then the exact locations in the jawbone are pinpointed, our periodontist then finishes this first step by examining your jawbone to confirm there is a sufficient amount of bone to support an implant in those specific spots identified.
When we all agree that the implant supported dentures will work for you, another appointment to actually place the dental implants will be scheduled. This next step is quite important as the oral surgery places those small titanium posts into the areas of your jawbone to support your new dentures. At the beginning of this small surgically procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic. The type and amount of anesthesia may vary, depending upon the difficulty of your case, the number of implants to be placed and your pain sensitivity. Once your gums are adequately numbed, the quick surgical procedure strategically places the posts. After this quick surgical procedure is behind us, we need to exercise deliberate patience together since it will take a few months for those posts to grow into, fuse into, and integrate with the jawbone. During this waiting period, you will receive a set of temporary dentures. Once the x-rays confirm that the posts have fully integrated, you get to return for your final fun visit. At this time, we will add tiny extensions or abutments to those titanium posts to reach the surface of your gums. Then your beautifully crafted permanent set of dentures are placed. You will see small nylon snaps on the backside of the denture tray that have been digitally placed perfectly. As you place the dentures on your arch these snaps lock directly on to the post extensions. These posts now provide the strength and stability benefits as if they were natural roots
Aftercare for Implant Supported Dentures
It will be important to follow some aftercare instructions directly after your procedure. Two obvious examples are to avoid any strenuous physical activity and to also avoid beverages that are extremely hot or cold. We will also advise you to not use a straw, to not spit, do not consume alcohol or any tobacco products to give your surgical sites a chance to heal.
After you have finally finished this healing process, the next thing you can do to enjoy your successful results is to continue to practice good at-home oral hygiene habits. These habits include brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once daily. These same good simple habits apply to your new dentures as well. That damaging plaque will adhere daily to any surface which will results in a gum disease. Make sure you consistently and regularly clean all artificial teeth, all attachments, and all your gums.
In addition to maintaining this consistent and proper oral selfcare at home, our team will encourage you to schedule regular checkups every six months. With these visits, we will monitor your implants with x-rays, make sure they are still fitting properly and ensure that any attachments, abutments, and implants are still positioned correctly. We will always professionally clean everything, dentures teeth, and gums, as well as check out any wear on those small nylon snaps. By exercising this preventative routine, you will proactively reduce any risks developing of any additional periodontal issues. This allows you to continue enjoying your healthy smile and the associated attributes of that smile for quite some time.
