The process of a pinhole gum rejuvenation is a less invasive and overall less painful procedure, making it more highly desirable among patients. Our team at ROOT™ Periodontal and Implant Center can help you have a healthy tissue, increasing the strength and health of your teeth.

Gum Disease

Your gum tissue plays an important role in keeping your teeth firmly in place. For many adults, their gum tissue is damaged from the battle with gum disease. A bacterial infection, gum disease affects more than 50% of adults in varying degrees. The most basic form, known as gingivitis, is the beginning stages, but a cautionary step. Gingivitis occurs when plaque has been allowed to remain in place, along the gumline. Plaque is a naturally made blend of food debris and saliva; it occurs naturally, and continually. Bacteria thrives happily in plaque, feeding on the sugars of the food we eat. As the bacteria feeds, it creates an acidic product that eats away at our enamel and infects the gums. The gums can not fight this infection, so it’s only course of action is to pull away from the source of infection, which also includes pulling away from our teeth. The secondary stage of gingivitis is periodontitis, followed by the most dangerous stage of chronic periodontitis. If your teeth appear longer, or if the gums have visibly pulled away, we can help.

Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Procedure

Studies have shown that the pinhole gum rejuvenation procedure is as successful with considerably less after surgery discomfort compared to the traditional restoration of a tissue graft.

A tissue graft requires the removal of healthy tissue, often from the roof of the mouth, and then grafted into place where tissue is missing. This requires multiple cuts and sutures. It’s a painful process with a sore recovery.

Pinhole gum rejuvenation requires a single incision, a small pinhole incision in the gingival mucosa apical to the area of recession, we can then insert specialized tools through the hole. With that small incision, we then clean and elevate the tissue in the area going through that singular cut. This means considerably less area for the development of infection or bleeding.

Pinhole Surgical Technique offers many benefits to patients who have suffered gum recession, including:

•  Minimally Invasive: A traditional gum graft has significantly more cuts and sutures.
•  Treat multiple areas: We can treat multiple areas of receded gums at the same time.
•  Speedy Recovery: With less cuts made, patients recover faster, with less swelling and less pain.

Recovery from Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Surgery

As with any incision, there will be a recovery process. Patients may experience limited bleeding, some swelling, and some discomfort. We advise patients to follow all recovery steps as discussed with our team. We strongly ask that patients seek immediate medical attention for any signs that indicate infection or seem out of the ordinary including fever or unusual bleeding. Most patients can resume regular activities within one week following surgery.
