Periodontal disease, aggressive tooth brushing, tooth loss, and your individual anatomy can permanently destroy one of the most precious aspects of your smile: your gums. Without adequate, properly positioned, and naturally contoured gum tissue, you’re at risk for a number of unwanted dental conditions as well as an unattractive appearance.
Commonly referred to as receding gums or recession, this condition often makes the teeth appear too long and, due to a lack of periodontal support, can eventually result in tooth loss. Receding gums can also compromise the success of your dental implants. Fortunately, Dr. Patel can perform a highly predictable and effective procedure known as gum grafting to reconstruct the damaged soft tissues. Without professional periodontal care, the condition is otherwise impossible to correct.
In an outpatient surgical procedure, healthy gum tissue can be harvested from another location within your own oral cavity and placed in the proposed location to cover exposed tooth roots and reinforce weak or insufficient gums. If necessary, Dr. Patel may also elect to utilize cadaver or synthetic grafting tissue.
With the newly-positioned tissue in place, the surgical site will be secured with sutures or an alternate surgical dressing. To complete your visit, personalized post-operative support will be available to ensure that you experience a comfortable and prompt recovery.
In preparation for your surgery, Dr. Patel will consult with you to explain the details of the procedure, review your medical history, and discuss your options for sedation and anesthesia.
With gum grafting, it is our goal to re-establish proper periodontal support, eliminate sensitivity, and improve the aesthetic impact of your smile.
