Can Your Smartphone Help Keep Your Gum Disease in Check?

If you are anything like most Americans, you already rely on your smartphone for a number of things. From making a shopping list to navigating to the store, or even ordering items online, the smartphone is quickly becoming one of those inventions that you wonder how you ever lived without.
Now, thanks to a few innovative thinkers, the smartphone can help you check for and monitor the presence of gum disease in your mouth. Nobody wants gum disease, but because it can develop quickly and without many symptoms, it sneaks up on many of our patients.
Introducing the Mint The Mint is an FDA approved medical device that works with an app on your phone to help monitor your breath for certain compounds. These compounds are evidence of the presence of gum disease. Halitosis (or bad breath, as it is more commonly known) can have a number of causes.
So, just having stinky breath doesn't mean that you necessarily have gum disease. However, the bacteria involved in gum disease give off specific gases, and the Mint device checks for those gases.
Better yet, the Mint can help you develop better oral hygiene practices: it comes with a few different programs that help you to regularly engage in proper hygiene technique. This can lead to healthier gums, and a healthier mouth.
