Sugars are bad for your health, both physically and orally. When you consume a lot of sugar on a daily basis, it can lead to a host of issues that you do not want to deal with.
These sugars will sit on the tops of your teeth and slip under the gum lines causing problems and lead to cavities or other oral complications.
Cavities and Sugar Under the Gum Line
When sugar slips under the gum line it can it become extremely difficult to remove. You cannot easily brush it away and the bacteria within your mouth feast on the byproducts these sugars can create.
While brushing and flossing regularly will help, overindulgence is something that needs to be avoided as often as possible. This can lead to tooth loss, tooth and gum pain, as well as oral inflammation.
To get to all of the sugar and bacteria that slip below the gum line, we will likely end up doing a little bit of scaling during your next office visit. The bacteria that cause cavities feed on the acids that sugar creates. When your diet is high in sugar, including natural sugars (sweet fruits are a great example), the risk of cavities multiply rapidly.
Now, fluoride is often used to help combat the effects of sugar and help promote good oral health. It not only helps to prevent damage to your teeth, but it can reverse some of the early damage of cavities if you follow a strict brushing and flossing routine and eliminate excess sugar from your diet.
If you are afraid that your diet is high in sugar and are worried about the impact that it is having on your oral health, contact our office today. We will happily sit down with you, examine your teeth and come up with a solution to help reduce the damage that sugar, and cavities are doing to your mouth.
